Groningen, the Netherlands
At a ratio of 50,000 students to 190,000 inhabitants, Groningen is rightly known as one of the best cities for studying in the Netherlands. It is situated in the North of the Netherlands, and is a vibrant city of young people – half of its population is under 35 – with a picturesque city centre and surrounded by beautiful countryside. The city is historically interesting, but also has impressive modern architecture.
Students can choose from a wealth of options, with over 175 study programmes at the two different universities: the University of Groningen and the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen. It is a great place for shopping, has amazing sport facilities for students and a buzzing nightlife. Groningen has won many awards, such as:
- Safest city in the Netherlands (2004)
- Best downtown in the Netherlands (2006)
- Best liked by its inhabitants in a comparable survey from the EU (July 2007).
